In the Ämmässuo eco-industrial park EKOMO, industrial ecology, resource wisdom, and circular economy come together in hands-on practice. In EKOMO, waste is no longer waste but a treasure. Synergetic co-operation between companies in production, services, and refining of waste will be the key there.
In Ämmässuo, unused or residual resources of one company will be used by another. This leads to a modern symbiotic ecosystem of companies settled down in the area. The visionary eco-industrial park will further benefit from the existing superb services and infrastructure provided by the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority HSY, such as a gas power plant and a biowaste composting plant. Clean energy will be available, as well as building permits for newcomers regardless of their business field.
”We hope that companies representing various developmental stages will come to do business at Ämmässuo – those with existing commercial concepts as well as companies demonstrating or developing thoroughly new technologies or business models. By now, companies which handle remarkable masses of materials have shown their interest. At the moment we, together with our partner firms, examine opportunities to exploit recycled asphalt and bottom ash as well as ways to utilise different soils in landscape construction,” says Hanna Tukiainen, Project Manager at HSY.
“Companies in EKOMO will profit from synergies. Raw material, and material treatment and transportation services will also be available for them. For international companies and investors the new eco-industrial park would offer steady and high-quality infrastructure, good traffic and IT connections, and added value through co-operation among various actors. The location of the park is great: the Helsinki-Vantaa airport, a motorway and the Helsinki city centre are all close by. In addition, Finland has solid expertise in IT solutions,” says Tukiainen.
