Districlima, S.A. develops since 2004 the heating and cooling urban distribution network in Barcelona, in the Forum and 22@ districts. Districlima has a production plant in the Forum area (that uses steam coming from a urban waste to energy plant and refrigerates the equipments with sea water) and a second production plant in the 22@ district (Tanger Plant).

The Central Plant (Forum) produces heat and cold from steam produced by the incineration of urban waste in the treatment plant, owned by TERSA.

Cooling production:

  • 2 absorption equipments of 4,5 MW each one
  • 1 cold water storage tank of 5.000 m3
  • 2 electric coolers of 4 MW each one
  • 2 electric coolers of 7 MW each one

Refrigeration system:

  • 3 exchanges of seawater/cooling water, machines of 12,5 MW each 
  • 1 seawater collection station of 5.000 m3/h

Heat production:

  • 4 steam / water exchangers of 5 MWh each one
  • 1 gas boiler of 20 MW (backup)

The Tanger Plant (22@ District), initially conceived as a peak plant, its goal is to guarantee the energy supply in periods of high demand or in case of any contingency. It has an advanced ice storage system that allows producing energy in periods of low demand and store it until it’s needed, in periods of higher demand. The combustion gas from the boilers is exhausted by the historical chimney of the ancient textile factory “Ca l’ Aranyó” (1872)

The start up took place in april 2012 and in a first phase it has the following equipment:

-Production of cold:
1 compression chillers of 6,7 MW – production of de glycoled water

-Production of heat:
2 gas boilers of 13,4 MW each one – production of hot water

In a second phase the following additional equipment will be installed:

-Production of cold:
1 compression chillers of 6,7 MW – production of glycoled water
1 compression chillers of 6,7 MW – production of cold water

-Production of heat:
1 natural gas boiler of 13,4 MW – production of hot water

The distribution newtork is composed by pre-insulated hot and cold water piping system that transports energy from the power station to the buildings. Is is a closed circuit that can flow underground or through service galleries.

At the present moment, 78 buildings are connected to the network such as the University (UPF), Hotels, offices (Media Tic, Business Park), council housing, hospitals and Convention Center.
