Maersk Line has committed itself to develop a cradle to cradle system with their vessels. Their business uses extensively two commodities: fuel and steel, so they have decided to reduce the cost of one of them by reusing the steel that is disposed from old ships.
The Triple E-Class will be the new model that is under development from Maersk. This ship will be design in a way that at the end of its long happy life, the material used can be reused. The main problem is that steel is being recycled on a large scale today; however, different types of steel and metals are often mixed in the recycling process. This reduces the quality of the recycled steel, thus sustaining the need for the resource-intensive mining of new iron ore.
Together with the Korean shipyard DSME Maersk have started to address this issue through a ‘Cradle-to-Cradle Passport’ which will be implemented on the new Triple-E ships. The passports will document approximately 95% (by weight) of the materials used to build the ships, thereby enabling better recycling of parts and materials used in the construction of the vessels.
