Using cardboard as its main building material, Dutch interior design firm FictionFactory developed Wikkelhouse. This house has 24 layers of cardboard glued together and wrapped around a unique rotating house-shape mold, then covered in a waterproof but breathable foil and wood paneling at the end to protect it from all weather conditions. It has a minimum lifecycle of 50 years and optimal insulation qualities. When ready, it can be transported to the desired location and then connected on the spot in just one day.

Consisting of various segments which can be easily connected and disconnected, its flexible design can cover every resident’s needs. Each segment is 5m2 and weighs 500 kg, meaning that this light construction does not need a foundation. It is also highly-customizable: extra windows or different finishing and color can be chosen. All materials are sustainably produced and the segments can be reused over and over and are 100% recyclable, making it 3 times more sustainable than traditional housing.

FictionFactory has a capacity of building 12 houses per year, at prices starting from 25.000 € for an airframe Wikkelhouse based on 3 segments (excluding transport and placement).
